Tenex and Intuniv contain the same medication, guanfacine. Tenex is a short acting version (works about 4 hours +/-), Intuniv is the long acting version (works about 8 hours +/-). The insurance company prefers Tenex because it is less expensive. However, if your doctor finds that the Tenex doesn't work as well as the Intuniv, she can contact the insurance company and make a formal request to have Intuniv authorized. Insurance companies will usually go along with a doctor's request for the more expensive medication if the patient's response shows that it works better for a particular patient than does the less expensive one.

My granddaughter who is 13 years old, has been taking 3 mg of Intuniv for the past 3 weeks, and it seems to be working well for her. She's been on a few different meds previously, but none seem to work that well. Her psychiatric doctor had been giving me sample packets of Intuniv. Then she gave me an prescription. However her health insurance refuses to pay for it. They suggested I try Guanfacin instead. Today her doctor phoned me and said she is putting her on Tenex. My question is how will this affect her since she's been doing much since she's been on Intuniv? What type of medicine is Tenex and will it have any adverse effects on when I take her off Intuniv and start giving her Tenex?
Thanks.
